“Evan Almighty” — which stars Steve Carell as Evan Baxter, a man anointed by God to build an ark — is a movie about learning to respect the planet, according to director Tom Shadyac. For a movie, this is not a small undertaking. While the average American is responsible for emitting 40,000 pounds of CO2 annually, the Conservation Fund calculated that “Evan Almighty” would emit 5.2 million pounds of CO2. But Shadyac and Universal Pictures conferred with the Washington, D.C. –based Conservation Fund and resolved to make the entire production carbon neutral.Ultimately, 2,050 trees were planted to neutralize the carbon emissions from “Evan Almighty,” and Shadyac determined from the outset that every aspect of the movie be executed as greenly as possible. He set the tone by giving bicycles to all members of the cast and crew to use while moving around the set. Recycled paper, plastic, aluminum and glass were used by the production team and craft service. Scripts were printed on both sides of each sheet of paper and then recycled. All the landscaping, lumber, windows, flooring, hardware and other reusable materials from the ark and the houses on set were donated to Habitat for Humanity. In addition, Universal created a Web site — getonboardnow.org — that allows movie fans to get involved. For just $5, fans can plant a tree and get their names on the “Evan Almighty” DVD. It seems “Evan Almighty” has already become the gold standard, or green standard: Last month Universal announced that it is considering launching other carbon-neutral and lower-carbon movies. |
| GoodNews Hero of the Week: Twelve-year-old Nhlanhla Matsebula, one of Swaziland's growing number of children orphaned by AIDS, has good reason to feel proud. He has mastered the skill of plowing a field with a team of oxen and in doing so, saved his late parents’ farm from being taken.“Swazi culture says that the right to occupy land depends on use. There is a lot of population pressure for land, and these AIDS orphans stand to lose their homes and their inheritance because they cannot work the fields,” said Lydia Mtembu, a community facilitator, as local volunteers who monitor the status of orphans and vulnerable children are called. Mtembu stops by to see Nhlanhla and Thembi at least twice a week. MORE... |
orldChanging.com works from a simple premise: that the tools, models and ideas for building a better future lie all around us. That plenty of people are working on tools for change, but the fields in which they work remain unconnected. That the motive, means and opportunity for profound positive change are already present. That another world is not just possible, it's here. We only need to put the pieces together. |
